Released by American Water Works Association, AWWA C509 is the standard for resilient-seated gate valves for water supply service. The terminology “resilient-seated” is sometimes also expressed as “resilient wedge”. It indicates that the wedge of the gate valve, which has plain one-piece hollow construction, shall be encapsulated/ coated with a layer of rubbers of plastics. In other words, resilient seats shall be bonded or mechanically attached to the gate wedge. When the gate valve is turned off, the rubber or plastic encapsulated wedge travels down to the bottom of flow passage of the valve body. An effective seal is achieved between the seating surfaces of the wedge and the body. Compared to metal seated gate valves, it doesn’t require a bottom debris-trapping “pocket” on the body, thus, the water can flow through without any obstruction when the valve is fully open. The body and bonnet of AWWA C509 resilient seated gate valves shall be made of gray iron or ductile iron. In engineering practice, ductile iron is preferred due to its superior strength and toughness.
