Aluminum bronze dual-plate wafer check valves manufactured to API 594, 6" 150#, supplied to an offshore platform in Africa, Bureau Veritas attested. Both the body & discs are made from ASTM B148 C95800 castings.
ASTM B148 C95800 is a typical aluminum bronze grade for sand castings. Designated as 82Cu-4Fe-9Al-4Ni-1Mn, it is an ideal material for the fabrication of bodies & internals of check valves, which are intended for use in coastal power plants, offshore platforms, subsea projects, ship building, seawater treatment, and other sectors involving chlorides and a wide variety of acids.
The corrosion resistance of aluminum bronze ASTM B148 C95800 is generally very high, especially in seawater, chlorides, and dilute acids, including sulfuric, phosphoric, hydrochloric, and hydrofluoric. It is much less susceptible to crevice corrosion than stainless steels, and resists both pitting and stress-cracking corrosion (SCC). Largely because of the high alumina (Al2O3) content of their protective corrosion-product films, aluminum bronzes have very high erosion-corrosion and cavitation resistance. ASTM B148 C95800 can tolerate water velocities more than twice as high as the limits for other copper alloys.
Copper: ≥79.0; Aluminum: 8.5~9.5; Iron: 3.5~4.5; Manganese: 0.8~1.5; Nickel (including cobalt): 4.0~5.0; Silicon: ≤0.10; Lead: ≤0.30; Copper plus named elements: ≥99.5. The contents of all elements are in the unit of weight percent. For ASTM B148 C95800 alloy, iron content shall not exceed the nickel content.
Tensile strength: ≥ 585 MPa [85 ksi]; Yield strength: ≥ 240 MPa [35 ksi]; Elongation in 2″: ≥ 15%.
Aluminum bronze check valves made of ASTM B148 C95800 sand castings can be furnished in Type A or Type B in accordance with API 594. Type A check valves shall have short face-to-face dimensions per API 594 standard. The body pattern may be wafer, wafer with lugs, or double flanged. Type B check valves are long pattern or short pattern with face-to-face/ end-to-end dimensions per ASME B16.10. The body style may be double flanged or butt welded.
ASTM B148 C95800 cannot be heat treated to improve mechanical properties, but it is commonly temper annealed to enhance its corrosion resistance. Generally, the valve casting parts shall be soaked in the furnace at a temperature of 1250±50°F (675±10°C) for 6 hours, and is subsequently cooled in air.
