ASTM A537/ A537, is the standard specification covers heat-treated carbon-manganese-silicon steel plates. Carbon steel plates made in accordance with ASTM A537 are primarily intended for fusion welded pressure vessels and structures.
ASTM A537 Class 1 plates.
Steel plates under this specification are available in three classes classified according to the different heat treatment: Class 1 (normalized), Class 2 (quenched and tempered) and Class 3 (quenched and tempered). The maximum thickness of plates furnished under this specification is 4 in. [100mm] for Class 1 and 6 in. [150mm] for Class 2 and Class 3.

The ASTM A537 steel shall be killed and conform to the fine austenitic grain size requirement of specification ASTM A20/ A20M. The ASTM A537 heat-treated plates Class 1 shall be normalized. Class 2 and Class 3 plates shall be quenched and tempered. The tempering temperature for Class 2 plates shall not be less than 1100°F [595°C] and not less than 1150°F [620°C] for Class 3 plates.
The inspection and testing required for ASTM A537 steel plates include: chemical analysis, tension test, Charpy V-Notch impact test, drop weight test, high-temperature tension test, ultrasonic examination, as well as magnetic particle examination.
