ASTM A179, identical with ASME SA-179, is the standard specification covering minimum-wall-thickness cold-drawn low-carbon steel tubes for tubular heat exchangers, condensers, and similar heat transfer apparatus. This specification cover tubes 1/8″ to 3″ [3.2 mm to 76.2 mm], inclusive, in outside diameter. The ASTM A179 tubes shall be made by the seamless process and shall be cold drawn; and they shall be heat treated after the final cold draw pass at a temperature of 1200°F [650°C] or higher. These seamless tubes are usually called as low-carbon steel tubes, heat exchanger tubes, boiler tubes, etc.

Finished tubes made in accordance with ASTM A179 shall be free of scale. A slight amount of oxidation will not be considered as scale. The following mechanical tests are required: flattening test, flaring test, flange test, hardness test, as well as hydrostatic test.
