Material Groups of ASME B16.5 Flanges

General Introduction

Flanges conforming to ASME B16.5 shall be made from forgings, castings, or plates in a variety of metal grades. These various metal grades can be further categorized into many material groups as listed in tables below according to same pressure-temperature ratings. Besides, these materials shall be applied with the following restrictions: (1) Plate and flat bar materials may be used only for blind flanges and reducing flanges without hubs; (2) Flanges shall be manufactured as one piece in accordance with the applicable material specification; (3) Flanges made from forgings shall be machined from a part that is brought as nearly as practicable to the finished shape and size; (4) The forging process is a compressive plastic hot-working operation that consolidates the material to produce an essentially wrought structure, and shall be so processed during the operation as to cause metal flow in the direction most favorable for resisting the stress encountered in service.

Material Groups

Materials in applicable ASTM specifications, which can be used for the manufacture of ASME B16.5 flanges, are listed in tables below. Each table indicates a specific material group. Metal grades of forging, casting, or plate in the same row of the table shall have the same nominal chemical composition. Corresponding materials listed in Section II of ASME BPVC may be used provided that the requirements of the ASME specification are identical to or more stringent than the ASTM specification for the grade, class, or type of material.
